👑 Royal London + Amsterdam + Kew Gardens + Cambridge + Oxford — one continuous 16-day trip. Seven nights in Bloomsbury (Sept 17–24), six nights in Amsterdam reached by Eurostar (Sept 24–30), then two final nights in Notting Hill (Sept 30 – Oct 2), flying home on BA191 from Heathrow T5 at 11:10 AM on Friday Oct 2. Days 8 and 14 are the crossing days and each covers two cities. Every day ends with a curated dinner booking.
✅ Re-verified 8 September 2026 · nine days out. Every venue, price, opening time and booking rule below has been checked again against official sources. Most of the plan stands. Six things changed and one needs booking today:
1. Eurostar home lands later than written. Train 9133 leaves Amsterdam Centraal 10:40 and reaches St Pancras at 13:57, not 13:00. Day 14 has been shifted an hour.
2. Bodleian tickets are on sale now. Slots for 15–30 September were released on 1 September and the 60-minute tour (£17.50, ends in Duke Humfrey's Library) sells out. Book before anything else.
3. The Riverhouse Sunday roast is now £50 / £65, not £45 / £55 — and the booking system closes the Sunday sitting at 16:00, so ask for 15:30.
4. Kew's summer discount ended 1 September. Budget about £25 a head, not £22.
5. Three Amsterdam prices moved. Rembrandt House is now €23.50 (not €17.50), Moco is €21.50, and the Heineken rooftop needs the €29.95 ticket rather than the base €24.95.
6. The EES kiosks at St Pancras are still not switched on. Border officers are processing registrations manually. Keep the early arrival anyway.
✅ Confirmed unchanged: Changing of the Guard is a full Guard Change at 11:00 on Friday 18 September (Number 12 Company Irish Guards). As You Like It plays the Globe at 19:30 on Wednesday 23 September. Westminster Abbey, the Tower, the Big Ben tour, Ceremony of the Keys, St Paul's, Westerkerk, Hortus, MOS and all fifteen restaurants are trading on the days and at the times written. Tube caps are still £8.90 and £16.30. ETIAS is not live and is not needed.

🚈Eurostar ✅ booked (both legs) — out on Thu 24 Sep, back on Wed 30 Sep. Add the tickets to the Eurostar app and download them offline before you leave home, and note your coach and seat numbers separately in case the phone fails. Check the app the evening before each leg for platform and timing changes, and remember that check-in closes 30 minutes before departure at St Pancras.
🏞EES (US Citizens): The EU Entry-Exit System became fully operational on 10 April 2026. Registration (passport scan, photo, fingerprints) happens at kiosks at St Pancras on departure day — arrive ~90 min before your train. Note that in July 2026 the St Pancras kiosks were reported still not fully working, with manual fallback in use. ETIAS is not required for this trip — it launches in Q4 2026 with a grace period into 2027.

There is nothing to buy in advance and the daily cap — confirmed for 2026 at £8.90 in Zones 1–2 and £16.30 across Zones 1–6 for the Kew and Heathrow days — applies automatically. Caps are frozen for 2026; single fares rose about 6% in March, so a Zone 1 hop is now £3.00 off-peak and £3.10 peak. ⚠ Important — US Citizens & EES: The EU Entry-Exit System (EES) is now fully live (rollout completed April 2026). Non-EU travellers register biometrics (photo + fingerprints) at self-service kiosks at St Pancras on the day of travel, before Eurostar check-in. Follow the recommended arrival time on your ticket — arriving by 9:15–9:30 AM for an 11am train gives comfortable margin. ETIAS is NOT required for this trip. As of September 2026 the system is still not live, no application portal is open, and the EU quietly dropped its Q4 2026 target over the summer — a 2027 start is now the realistic expectation, followed by a grace period. The fee, when it comes, will be €20. Any website offering to sell you an ETIAS today is a scam. Important update: the 49 EES kiosks at St Pancras are installed but still not in service. Eurostar said on 13 August 2026 that they remained in testing with no date fixed by the French authorities, and that position had not changed as of early September. Border officers are creating EES records manually at the desk instead, so expect a passport check rather than a self-service fingerprint scan — but the process could switch on at any time, which is exactly why the early arrival stays. Check Eurostar's own EES page a week before you travel. Eurostar also supports the EU's optional Travel to Europe app, which lets you pre-load passport and facial data in the 72 hours before departure — worth doing if it is live for your route.

As US citizens entering the EU Schengen Area, you must register with the EU Entry-Exit System (EES) before Eurostar check-in — the system has been fully operational since April 2026. Eurostar has installed 49 self-service kiosks in zones A, B and C around St Pancras — but as of early September 2026 they are not yet switched on, and registration is being handled manually by border officers at the desk. Follow the signage on the day: if the kiosks are live you scan your passport and have your photo and fingerprints taken, about 5–10 minutes each; if they are not, you simply join the normal queue. It can't be done online in advance; station staff are on hand to direct you. Your biometrics are then stored for 3 years, so your Amsterdam arrival (and future EU trips) need no re-registration.

Zaanse Schans — Windmills, Cheese & Clogs
A preserved village of working 18th-century windmills along the Zaan river — you can climb inside the working mills (the paint mill De Kat and sawmill are the best), watch clog-carving demos, and taste your way through the Catharina Hoeve cheese farm. The village itself is still free to wander — the €17.50 compulsory entry fee reported in the press last year has not been introduced. What exists instead is the optional Zaanse Schans Card at €29.50, which covers two mills of your choice, the Zaans Museum and Verkade Experience, the Windmill Museum, the Weaver's House, Museum Zaanse Tijd and a digital audio tour. Individual mill tickets are still sold on site if you only want one or two. Lunch at a pancake house in the village before heading back.

A ten-minute walk from Rembrandt House. One of the world's oldest botanical gardens (1638), founded on spice-trade seeds. The butterfly greenhouse and the palm house are the highlights. Worth doing, and not for the reason the name suggests. De Wallen is the oldest quarter of Amsterdam — the Oude Kerk goes back to around 1306, and the lanes around Zeedijk and Nieuwmarkt are the medieval city that the canal belt was later built around. The Rick Steves walk treats the district as history and social policy rather than spectacle. It begins at Dam Square — about twenty minutes on foot from Hortus, so leave the garden at 16:45 — and ends at Nieuwmarkt and Zeedijk, which is ten minutes from the hotel and puts you in the right place to change for dinner. Follow signs inside St Pancras to King's Cross St Pancras Underground and take the Circle Line (westbound, yellow) direct to Bayswater — roughly 20 minutes, no changes, which is exactly what you want with luggage. Leave Bayswater station, walk west on Moscow Road and turn onto Hereford Road; the pub is on the corner at No. 47, about 6 minutes on foot. A cab from the St Pancras rank is the alternative: ~35 minutes, £30–40 depending on traffic.

Westbourne Grove is two minutes from the door — independent shops, galleries and coffee. Portobello Road is a 10-minute walk west (the antiques market runs Saturdays, but the street, the pastel houses and the shops are worth the stroll any day). Kensington Gardens and the Italian Gardens are a 10-minute walk south if you would rather have grass and a bench.

Option A — Pre-booked cab, door to door (recommended with checked bags): ~35–45 min to T5 at that hour, £55–75. Ask the hotel to book it the night before for 7:15 AM; a Friday-morning car ordered on the spot is a gamble you don't want on departure day. Drops you directly at T5 departures.
Option B — Rail via Paddington: Bayswater → Paddington is one stop on the Circle Line (or a 12-minute walk along Bishop's Bridge Road). From Paddington the Heathrow Express runs direct to Terminal 5 in about 21 minutes, roughly every 15 minutes (~£25/person if booked in advance). The Elizabeth line also serves T5 direct from Paddington in about 32 minutes for roughly half the fare, and takes contactless. Either way, check the departure board — a few services terminate at Terminals 2 & 3, in which case change there for the T5 shuttle.

Once airside you have the full T5 concourse for breakfast; gates are announced on the screens, and B and C gates require a short automated transit train, so watch for that and allow 10–15 extra minutes.
